- Can you supply fishing equipment for guests that do not have their own?
- Yes,
we can provide both light spinning rods and fly fishing rods.
- When is the best fishing?
- The
best time of year for Rainbow Trout fishing at Chaunigan Lake
is June, July, August, and September with August being the
warmest month. The elevation helps keep the water temperatures
cool all summer. The ice thaws by mid-May so the Rainbow Trout
are energetically spawning for about a month (expect to catch
a few red spawners). In late May we are able to unlock a rustic
cabin but we officially open for guests on June 1st. May bookings
are taken on a drop-in call-first basis to ensure we have
staff on site and that the trek to the lake is worth it. Note
that the roads in May are very muddy so be prepared (call
our office for more advice on coming to the lake in May).
By June the muddy sections of the roads are hard again so
any vehicle from a motorcycle to a 5-ton truck can drive right
up to the lake and our lodge. July is a wonderful month for
fishing since it provides a varied mix of weather and temperature.
August weather is hot and the fish are deep so dry-fly techniques
don’t work well. Use a wet-fly, two or three lead shots, a
moderately fast sinking line, and listen to the advice of
our angling guide on where the fish are hanging out. In September
the weather cools and the fish come up from the depths so
another season of fantastic dry-fly fishing is available.
By the end of September the weather at the lodge is getting
too cold and we send the horses to stable them over the winter.
By October we are preparing the lodge for the long winter
freeze. While you are at the lodge be sure to use the fishing
gear and techniques advised by the lodge staff or experienced
guests, and you will have a great fishing vacation. Don’t
forget about the trailrides. We have a number of spectacular
viewpoints to show you!
- What is the size of the lake?
- 3
½ miles long X 1 ½ miles wide
- 461
hectares or 1,134 acres
- Do float tubes work on this lake?
- Yes,
float tubes work well but you have to bring your own. Most
people put the float tube in the boat then motor to their
fishing location and float tube fish from there.
- Are flies available at the lodge?
- Yes,
we carry a broad range of flies that work well on the lake.

Lake Lodge would like to thank Barry's
Bait and Tackle for the use of their photos. These flies have proven
to work well. We have a supply of flies available for sale at the lodge,
however we recommend that you bring your own supply of your favorites
just to be sure. Sometimes we run out and it takes a while to order more.
